Indian Travel Agents set to block Jet Airways

Wednesday, December 03, 2008: Six travel agent associations in India are set to stop selling plane tickets this Thursday the 4th with Jet Airways, in an effort to push the airline to reinstating their 5% commission.
The six associations of Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI), Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI), IATA Agents Association of India (IAAI), Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), Association of Domestic Tour Operators in India (ADTOI) and Enterprising Travel Association of India (ETAA), effectively see all IATA agencies in India covered.
We have decided to stop selling Jet tickets from December 4th. This was decided at todays meeting, where more than 60% of the entire travel industry was represented, said Ajay Prakash, TAFI General Secretary, to Indias Business Standard.
Although three carriers have stopped paying us commission, we have decided to go ahead with Jet because it is the market leader and it should be the first to make a move, he adds.
Kingfisher and Air India have also stopped paying Indian travel agents commissions.
It is estimated that some 90% of Jets airfares are sold with Indian travel agents, both online and offline, slightly higher than the industry average of 85%.
