Jet Airways looks toward Europe with new Brussels Airlines codeshares

Monday, 3 December 2007: Jet Airways had been given approval to a new codeshare agreement with Brussels Airlines on several routes into Europe including Barcelona and Paris.The new additions further flesh out Jet Airways’ Europe network, with traffic rights to Birmingham, Madrid and Geneva just recently approved.These latest moves heat up the competition between Jet Airways and Air India, who is gearing up to move into the Star Alliance group come December.Whilst both airlines are looking to expand outwards, Jet Airways has already taken major steps, setting up a European hub in Brussels. Setting it up early in May this year, Jet Airways Chairman had then said, “Jet Airways was looking for an opportunity to combine its expansion plan to USA and Canada with an efficient hub in Europe together with a stronger national carrier offering a wide network … we have found it all at Brussels.”The European network for both Indian carriers, as it stands, has only just begun to be tapped into. With Air India only so far operating to Birmingham and Paris, and Jet Airways only just beginning to operate its own services to the region.Currently Jet Airways has 68 aircraft on order, with delivery just beginning, the carrier is expecting much of its $11 billion investment in months to come.
