Singapore's Tiger Airways yr to March passengers 1.5 mln; eyes more aircraft

19-Apr-07：SINGAPORE (XFN-ASIA) - Budget carrier Tiger Airways said it carried 1.5 mln passengers in the fiscal year to March 2007, up from 800,000 passengers carried on its first year of operations last year. Load factor grew 9.5 pct year-on-year as capacity increased by 63.5 pct, it said.For the next financial year, Tigers chief executive Tony Davis said the low-cost carrier "expects to see a very aggressive growth rate" with the start-up of its Australian operations and increased opportunities in Asia.Tiger Airways intends to make an announcement about its Australian headquarters in a few weeks, he said, with Tiger Airways Australia Pty Ltd hoping to start flights by the end of 2007.The airline is also looking to set up its next Southeast Asian base outside of Singapore this year and is open to partnerships and joint ventures, Davis said.The airline hopes to fly to India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Brunei this year and may order more aircraft to support its growth plans. Davis said the airline was in discussions with its shareholders, including Singapore Airlines who has a 49 pct stake, to assess whether it should order new or old planes of various makes.Davis said shareholders were also considering an initial public offering for the airline should the need arise, although no target date has been set.
